CAMILLUS, NY - At the end of the year, Party City closed its retail store in Fairmount Fair after eight years of operation.

Now the space has been divided, and two businesses are moving in. Talbot's, a Hingham, MA-based retailer selling women's clothing, shoes and accessories, is moving into one side, town of Camillus officials confirmed.

The other side will be a CoreLife Eatery, as previously announced.

Work on continuing on the two spaces, and both are expected to open in the next few months, officials said.

Talbot's has a shop off Genesee Street in DeWitt and in Skaneateles. There also are locations in Ithaca, New Hartford and an outlet store in Waterloo.

Talbot's operates nearly 500 clothing stores across the U.S., including its outlet and clearance stores.

An Auburn-based organization centered on benefiting young women will hold a clothing drive for professional attire Saturday.

The event is sponsored by the nonprofit Beverly L. Smith Empowerment Organization, which is meant to connect young women to mentorship opportunities, break down barriers to professional success and provide college scholarships, initiative CEO and founder Melody R. Smith Johnson said. The drive will be held in front of Auburn Public Theater on Exchange Street. It will accept new or gently used size 0-18 professional clothing that can be worn at job interviews or at work such as suits, tops, bottoms, professional dresses, professional jewelry and handbags.

Smith Johnson said one of the barriers women face is suitable professional clothing, which prompts the drive. She said the majority of the women the organization works with come from single-family homes. The organization, which is named after Smith Johnson's mother, Beverly L. Smith-Crafton, hopes that by this upcoming July it will have granted $50,000 in scholarships over the past four years.

Smith Johnson said she had been helped when she was in college by different people who "slipped $20 in my hand" or gave her information that helped her find ways to get through college so she wanted to provide a similar helping hand for others.

"When I moved here, I said 'How can I help? What can I do?'" Smith Johnson said. "I had a couple young women in my life who were talking about going to school and didn't have all of the money that they needed."

She said there are 20 young women who are being helped by the initiative, three of whom are from Auburn. The others are from other parts of the state, Virginia or Connecticut, she said. The initiative's scholarship started in 2016 but the organization became a nonprofit in 2017. The first set of scholarship winners will be graduating from college next year.

In addition to hoping to secure clothing for the women in the initiative, Smith Johnson wants to donate remaining clothes to young women at Auburn High School who aren't affiliated with the initiative and will be going to Cayuga Community College, Wells College and Onondaga Community College.

She said it is important to her to point young women to opportunities.

"We live in a country of very busy people, particularly in communities of color, and our young women are not necessarily adept at identifying mentors and establishing those relationships."

DENHAM SPRINGS - Deputies are looking for a trio of women who appeared to have stolen thousands of dollars worth of apparel from two Livingston Parish businesses.

According to the sheriff's office, both thefts happened recently at businesses along Juban Road. Surveillance cameras at the first store captured the women bringing roughly $600 worth of clothing items into changing rooms and seemingly emerging with those unpaid items stuffed in their purses.

At the second store, investigators say the same women stuffed high-price purses and wallets in shopping bags and walking out. Those items were reportedly worth about $2,000 total.

Anyone with information on thefts is asked to the sheriff's office at 225-686-2241.
