Australian sister duo The Veronicas are back, and we didn't even have to wait seven excruciating years this time around. With their underappreciated self-titled third studio album having been released in late 2014, featuring solid singles including "You Ruin Me" and "If You Love Someone", the girls have wasted no time getting back into the studio for an upcoming fourth full length project. The Veronicas officially kickstart the new era with the release of "In My Blood", an emotional, euphoric, dance-charged track that takes the artists down a completely new musical route.
"In My Blood" maintains the sisters' ability to convey the emotions associated with a particular experience, this time they just bring that skill to the crowded dancefloor with an energetic, pulsating, electro-influenced beat that quickly encompasses the listener. After a delicate, piano-driven intro, the new single immediately switches production gears as they begin to perfectly describe the feeling of love at first sight. It's complexity highlights the tricky mixed emotions that come along with intimacy.
The Veronicas have always had the uncanny ability of coming together for perfect harmonies throughout their career, it's no different here. Lisa and Jessica showcase immense vocal chemistry, even when production effects alter their vocals with successful end results on the infectious surge of the chorus. "Now you got me wanting more, I felt religion with you on the floor, the holy word that I've been waiting for, baby stay with me, stay with me," they belt on one of the well-crafted verses.
The recent release does bare some artistic similarities to The Veronicas' previous "Lolita" experiment (that pristine gem did not receive the credit it truly deserved), but instead of an in-your-face, dubstep-like approach, "In My Blood" sounds much more relaxed and sharp, taking on a summer-ready sound that could easily find success on the radio airwaves. From the subtle vocal delivery to the imagery described in the songwriting, it's an enticing new direction.
Compared to the return to their pop/rock roots on their previous album, The Veronicas are giving the bouncy synths, robotic effects and the emphasis on an inescapable hook another shot on "In My Blood". The bet definitely pays off. Said to have been inspired by the dance/pop work of the late 90s, specially "Can't Get You Outta My Head" by Kylie Minogue, the duo have embodied the uncontrollable rush of meeting someone new to celebrate life with, while providing fans with a throwback, retro-influenced future smash that should not be ignored.
