Elevated loungewear—not a new concept by any means, but a tricky one nonetheless. How do you actually balance style with comfort? That’s the question designers strive to answer season after season. The of-the-moment answer is often the tracksuit. By no means are we against the crowd-pleasing coordinated separates, but we do welcome alternatives—one can only wear coordinated sweats so many days in a row. In our search to diversify our comfort-oriented closet, we welcomed the refreshing substitute we saw among the pre-fall collections: elevated pajamas.

Though most consider an old t-shirt and boxer shorts the basis of a sleepwear wardrobe, this is a chance to dial it up. NYC-based designer Marina Moscone showed a crinkle-cut satin pair with custom mohair piping detail in her recent pre-fall ’21 collection. As is the case with many, Moscone is designing for a lifestyle shift which she has personally felt alongside the rest of the world. “Day to day, I live in a uniform—while spending all our time at home now, I find that women still want to feel comfortably elevated,” the designer tells Coveteur. “These pajama-style sets are the perfect look to wear all day at home, for outside errands, and for evening when the time comes again!”

Other designers had similar ideas. At Erdem, we saw a matching set of fluid blue silk rendered in a floral motif. The design duo behind Jil Sander opted for a more minimal approach with a polished forest green top layered over jogger-style matching bottoms—take or leave the high heels. Both designers relished in the accessories, layering on scarves, headbands, necklaces, and handbags to create a luxurious feeling from head to toe.

Moving from sightings on the runway to those in reality, the styling is even more diverse. A pair of sneakers provides just the right amount of irony for a quick jaunt to the store—add a coat to brace chilly temps. If you’re feeling up for it, try color-coordinating high heels and a polished handbag. Our favorite combination happens to involve the addition of a couch in an equally loud print, a coffee cup, and newspaper. But despite all the styling tricks, we’re simply telling you it’s cool to wear pajamas all day; need we say more?
